How DSLR Camera Focuses?

how dslr camera focuses

You must have read the tips for buying  your first DSLR in the last post. Now, I will tell you that how DSLR camera focuses? To understand the functionality of your DSLR, you need to get back to the basics that how a human eye functions.

See, your DSLR camera functions similarly the way your eye functions. Once you understand this simple concept, you can make well focused shots. The human eye has a wider range and broader perspective. In the same manner, you can enhance the dimensions of your DSLR camera with lenses. I believe, all the innovations have drawn inspiration from the mechanism of human body. It is the most sophisticated machine. DSRL focus system is also based on human eye.

How Focal Points Determine The Focused Area?

When you wake up in the morning, you take some seconds to focus on things. Similarly, your DSLR camera does not focus immediately. It needs time to recognize the thing with in a scene. You have to tell your DSLR camera what is to be focused and what is to be left out.

For that matter, there are several focus/focal points in your camera. Some DSLRs have 9 focus points or 16 or 19 or more. These are small square boxes. These square boxes tell the DSLR that which specific area is required to be focused in the whole scene.

You have to select the focal/focus point and press the release/click button halfway down only. Keep your finger half-pressed on the button. Once your targeted subject is sharp in the viewfinder, you hear a beep sound then press the button more tightly. If you choose the right focal point, you will get sharp and focused image. In case, you chose the focal point away from your desired subject, your subject will not be tack sharp. These small square boxes turn red once they read and lock the focus on the subject.

dslr camera focus system
There are 11 focal points in this photo. Red focal points determined the focused area.

Make sure, your lens is on auto focus mode. There are four different modes in a DSLR camera, dedicated to auto focus area i.e. (i) AF-C: Auto Focus Continuous (ii) AF-A: Auto Focus Auto (iii) AF-S: Auto Focus Single (iv) MF: Manual Focus. How these modes work? We will talk about it in future posts. For a time being, you can set your camera on AF-A mode.

DSLR Camera Functions Similar To The Human Eye:

DSLR camera has a beautiful feature to stand out the focused subject from its surroundings. To understand this, raise your any finger in front of your eyes. Keep it very close to your eyes. You will see whole image blurred. Now, move your finger little away from the eyes. Your finger will start getting sharp and focused. It means, there should be a smallest distance from the lens of your eyes to see the things clearly, Right?

dslr camera focus system

Similarly, the lens of a DSLR camera works. If You have mounted 18-55 mm lens to your camera. The smallest distance between your lens and the required subject should be at least 18mm. If the distance is below 18 mm like 15 mm or 17mm, the subject would not be focused.

Now, get back to the basics again. Once your finger is focused then the background is blurred. Now shift the focus of your eyes from the finger (foreground) to the background.

Shifting focus from foreground to background.

You will see that your finger has turned blurry and background is tack sharp. Though, finger is on the same distance from your eyes. In the same manner, you need to focus the subject by pressing the release button halfway down with the help of focal points. That is how, DSLR camera creates a blurry background to stand out the focused subject. The lenses play an important role in this science. We name it as shallow depth of field or defocused area. There are different lenses to achieve this kind of specific results. What lens you should buy for your specific need? We will talk about it later.

which camera i should buy

You want to buy your first digital Camera?

How much you want to spend? If your budget is below 20k and you also want to get the large prints to hang it on the wall, you can buy point and shoot camera alsoPreferably, buy any point and shoot camera between 12 Megapixel to 20 Megapixel.

But you want the defocused background in your photos, Right? You will have to increase your budget a bit to achieve such results in your every photos. Once you raise the budget, you can put your hands on DSLR level cameras. How to achieve the defocused background by DSLR? We will talk about it in our separate blog.

Majorly, Nikon and canon has wide range of starting level DSLRs.

1. Nikon D3300:

This is a fantastic entry level camera. Nikon has recently upgraded this with D3400. Though, I always suggest that one should go for the updated technology yet you can settle with D3300. With this camera, you can save money and get great images too. You will not get touch screen and wi-fi technology with this one. I have used this camera with 18-200 mm lens and I could get stunning images with this combination. 24.2 megapixel supports you to get large prints for your photo wall.

Specifications of Nikon D3300:-

Continuous shooting speed: 5fps (It means, you can make photos at the rate of 5 frames per second)

2. Canon EOS 1300D:

It is an another great camera in the segment of entry level DSLRs. Canon upgraded this from 1200D. I have tried my hands on 1200D and I was very much satisfied with its results. With 1300D, You get wi-fi and NFC technology to access and transfer your photos directly through the smartphone as a quick sharing tool. Nikon has come up with this technology in their another entry level camera i.e. D3400.

Specifications of Canon EOS 1300D:-

Sensor: APS-C CMOS (A cropped sensor)

Megapixels: 18.0 MP

Lens mount: Canon EF-S

Screen: 3-inch, 920,000 dots

Continuous shooting speed: 3fps (It means, you can make photos at the rate of 3 frames per second)

ISO range: 100-6400

Flash: Built-in

Max video resolution/File format: 1080p/MOV

Which lens you should buy with your entry level DSLR?

Usually, the authorized dealers press you to buy the camera with two lenses here in India. One 18-55 mm (Kit Lens) and second 55-200 mm (Offered Lens). Either you buy only 18-55 mm or you buy only camera body (Without lens). I suggest, Instead of two lenses, You should buy one multipurpose lens i.e. 18-200 mm with VR (Vibration Reduction) technology. Though, 18-200 mm is not a cheaper lens. You can buy it from Tamron to save some money. It has recently raised its level a notch in the performances of lenses. Tamron 18-200 mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC is almost half the price of what Nikon offers for the same.

which camera i should buy
Shot made by Tamron 18-200 mm.
If you buy two different lenses, you will end up struggling with changing the lens. Imagine, you have an 18-55 mm mounted on your DSLR, you can not make detailed shots beyond  the range of 55 mm. You will still be able to view the scene but you will not get the desired results until you get closer to the subject with in its range. If you have mounted 18-200 mm lens, you will not face such issues. If you buy other than Nikon or Canon made lens, you will have to buy it specifically for Nikon mount or Canon Mount DSLR.

You will have to shell out more money once you decide to buy DSLR. Don't forget to buy UV protection filter for your lens and screen guard of the camera body. Company does not offer memory cards also with the camera. You will have to buy these accessories separately which will cost you another 3k - 4k.

Wedding Photography Terminology

wedding photography terminology

Understand the wedding photography terminology

My last write-up was based on tips for hiring a candid wedding photographer. Now, most of the couples must be fixing up a meeting with photographers for the coming wedding season.
In the era of selfie, almost everyone possesses some knowledge of photography. Many times, I get phone calls from my friends to seek more advice related to photography. In this process, I also get updated. Some of them suggested me to write a post over the same. I am glad If I could contribute a bit to your photography knowledge also.
Why you should know it?
If you know less terminology, You find yourself alienated having conversation with your photographer. You, Immediately, jump to the question "How much do you charge for a wedding?" Photographer has to answer in figures. Conversation ends here!
How does it affect?
The photographer does not get the opportunity to explain his/her style. He/She fails to understand your expectations also. You also leave a chance to understand the services he/she is going to offer.

Photography language is easy to understand!

It is helpful to understand the future line of actions by knowing some Jargon of any profession. For example, Some of you understand the words of health care industry. It helps you to talk in detail with your nutritionist about your next plan of actions. Once you have the idea of some photography terminology, you know that what kind of results you will get? Whether your photographer's style is going to match your choice or not? Or will he/she live up to your expectations?
Let's simplify the photography language which we use as a wedding photographer. I am not going to discuss anything about technicalities. I will explain it to you in a laymen language and you are invited to update me as well in case I miss something. Here are some commonly used terms in the world of wedding photography which I have picked up for you:

1. "I am candid wedding photographer":

wedding photography terminology

Candid wedding photography entered in India around 2009. It is still a new baby for many of us. "I do candid wedding photography" is not enough in itself to be understood. Candid wedding photography is approached under two ways i.e. 1. Directorial Approach 2. Street/Photo-journalistic Approach.

(i) Directorial approach:

Your wedding photographer gives you the direction to pose in the specific style. They make a scene selections, understand the lighting area and try several perspectives. They tell you to make poses in a way that it does not seem a pose and comes out more or like candid shots. It depends upon the individual wedding photographer how he/she takes directorial approach.

(ii) Photo-journalistic approach:

In a photo-journalistic style the subject is unaware of being photographed. It is more like a street photography. The person is emotionally engrossed in doing some activity. Photographer captures such emotional sides. You have to be involved in less poses and stay more natural or candid. Professional photographers develop their eye to notice the moments. They learn with incessant efforts to understand 'What is to be captured and what is to be left?'

2. Full frame camera:

full frame vs crop camera

Full camera is different from other small/compact digital cameras. There are amateur cameras which are cropped ones. Full frame cameras have the bigger sensor size than cropped cameras. Cropped camera is like your eyeglasses. Once you wear your eyeglasses, the vision outside the frame is not clear. You can only see through the cropped frame of your specs. Full frame cameras are like contact lenses to your eye. Once you wear contact lenses the vision is broader and clear.

wedding photography terminology

Photographers who own full frame cameras, they have the ability to capture broader view. The full frame cameras work better in low light. These cameras can absorb more light with high ISO range. The quality of the pictures are not compromised with proper understanding and right Technics. Full frames have an edge over cropped cameras when it comes to using wide angle lenses. The full frame cameras are expensive to own. There are full frame cameras from Nikon, Canon, Sony, etc. in the market.

3. RAW Files:

RAW vs JPEG image

Photos have several types like JPEG, PNG, TIFF and RAW. RAW photo is like an unborn baby. It is just one step away from being used for prints or using over online platforms and that step is processing.
Photographers have a wide scope to create the wow images by right method of processing. RAW images are created with in the camera through specific functions. RAW images can not be uploaded directly over the internet. It needs specific program to open it. There are free converter available of RAW to JPEG. Once it is converted into JPEG format, it is ready to use/print!

4. Re-touching photos:

wedding photography terminology

RAW images are transferred into the photo editing programs. Photos are not manipulated much. The degree of manipulation or re-touching depends upon individual photographer. I, personally, avoid making manipulation in the post processing.
Photographers invest their time in the post processing to make photos perfect for prints. Efforts are put in for long hours to enhance the quality of the photos.

5. Digital Images on USB/Hard Drive/Disk:

creative USB sticks

Photos are stored in a USB stick/Hard Drive these days. Some photographers give a fixed number of photos. Some give as many photos as it is required to tell the story of your wedding. The prices of the USB stick/Hard Drive is an extra money to be paid to the photographer.
Wedding packages which includes digital images are bit expensive. Digital images are processed and re-touched which take considerable amount of time. Sometimes, it is not possible to store RAW data in one USB stick. For example, Three days event including wedding day's RAW data go up to 100GB.

6. Shoot Time-line:

Almost every wedding photographer wants to know the shoot time line in advance. It includes the date and time of rituals/ceremonies, place of events like getting ready, sangeet, mehandi and reception. These activities give an idea to the photographers for creating stories. It is also helpful to maintain the story links between each time line.
Photographers also get the idea about total hours to be spent and they are fully prepared with back up tools. To avoid any last minute delay or shoot crisis on your wedding day, you must discuss the shoot time line with photographer. It is the first and foremost thing to discuss.

7. Save The Date:

save the date wedding ideas

Most couples send the wedding invitation card at least 45 days before the wedding day. Some couples design great save the date cards. There are online solutions from Photojaanic for such services. I have personally used their services and their back end support is great. You can send your save the date cards at early stage. It helps your friends/relatives to mark the wedding date on the calendar. Sending 'save the date cards' idea is highly trending these days.

8. High and Low Resolution Images:

high resolution vs low resolution

Some photographers provide the low resolution digital images. The low resolution images are also low in megabits. These low resolution digital images take less time in uploading over virtual world. It is difficult to get wall size prints of such low resolution digital images.
You get better prints of high resolution images. Wedding packages with high resolution digital images are expensive. Some photographers give digital proofs. These are also low resolution files which is given to you for selecting the images.

9. Retainer/Deposit:

You give a certain amount to hold the booking for wedding day. It is a non-refundable amount in case circumstances force you to reschedule/cancel your wedding. It is also known as deposit/reservation fee. But you can sit with your photographer and decide to make it refundable in certain situations. Deposits build up faith to the relationship between you and the photographer. Through the retainer/deposit the photographer is rest assured that client will show up. It is a win win situation for both the parties.

tips to get healthy skin

How to get a healthy skin before your wedding day?

Your wedding day is drawing near. You must be thinking about your looks. My clients are always concerned about how he/she is going to look in photos? 'Looks' is very important in photography. Every one wants the best look on their wedding day. Photographer does its job by capturing moments but a fake glowing face touched with the Photoshop dies away in your wedding album with the course of time. Instead of getting fixed your looks with Photoshop, try these tips to get healthy skin before wedding day.

People go for spa sittings for months. Try different diet charts. One of my clients in a meeting said "I am not here to compare my skin with the fairness shown in the advertisements. I am focusing on a healthy skin." Wow! I asked, and how did you get a healthy skin? She replied "by following a healthy lifestyle".

Choosing spa sittings or following diet charts are one thing and having a healthy skin is another. I am not a skin expert but the experts like Rujuta Diwekar also writes that you should focus on right eating habit on the right time with proper physical activities and you will see the great positive results. I always suggest my clients to read 'Don't lose your mind, lose your weight' by Rujuta Diwekar. You will realize that healthy lifestyle is the key to get nice looks and well-shaped body. After all, it is your body and you have to live with it till the last breath of life so take care of it more than your car or gadgets. Let's read the basics of a better lifestyle which is also mentioned in our 'Vedas'.

1. Drink Water To Get Healthy Skin

Most of us know that Our body contains 70% water. But these days we consume less water because of our hectic schedule and dehydrate more. Moreover, we store toxins and carbon particles in our body because of air pollution and unhealthy food. Drinking at least 3- 4.5 liter water in a whole day purge the toxins from your body which helps in glowing your skin naturally. Drinking water on empty stomach in the morning helps in absorbing more nutrients and increases the production of new blood and muscle cells. Interestingly, By consuming 4 liter of water in whole day sip by sip will help you in losing considerable weight over your belly.

You have to break this rule in one situation to get the positive results. You should not have water just after your meal. Wait for at least 45 minutes! Once we finish our meal, the most of the blood is in our stomach to generate a heat which helps in digesting the food. Immediately, drinking water after your meal cools down the digestion system. You must avoid ice creams or any cold stuff just after your meal. Though, It is advisable to drink water at least 20 min. before your meal.

2. Green Tea/Herbal Tea is Good For Your Body And Skin

Green tea is in trend now. It is easily available at super markets. Organic India offers nice flavors in green tea like Rose, Mulethi, Pomegranate, Tulsi Tummy etc. It is an excellent source of anti-oxidants which helps to fight against illness. 3 cup of green tea in a day increases your metabolism by 3% and helps in burning 50-100 calories a day. You must have it with a Luke warm water and avoid adding the fake sugar otherwise it is not going to help you.

3. Meditation/Yoga Brings Glow On Your Face

The more we grow, the more we breathe in less oxygen. On the top of it, We are habitual to consume soda drinks. With the course of time, the level of Oxygen goes down and CO2 level goes up in our body. Ayurveda says that low level of Oxygen in your body is a major reason for all the health problems. Any kind of meditation or yoga practice in the morning helps you to breathe in more Oxygen. If you don't have enough time to practice yoga, you can just have breathing exercise for 5-7 minutes only. Once the level of Oxygen is increased in your body, your skin will start getting healthy.

4. Nothing Beats Healthy Breakfast

Healthy breakfast is the essential task to follow. Healthy breakfast does not mean your plate is to be filled with lots of butter and stuffed parantha every morning. You should have all kind of breakfasts. You will have to plan your breakfast a night before. You should focus on the stuffs made with whole grain; a bowl of oat meal made with milk and topped with fruits and nuts; egg omelette with lots of green vegetables; Seasonal fruits. You must have seasonal fruits in your breakfast. It is hard to deny the fact that seasonal fruits are fresh and help to nourish your skin.

5. Don't Let Yourself Go Hungry

You want to avoid deep fried stuff but you have it every time once you go hungry. The market is full of junk foods because it does not take much time to cook. Once we go hungry, we find less options to have healthy food outside home. In this case, you will have to plan it in advance. You don't have to let yourself go hungry. For an instance, When I was studying at Delhi University, I always wanted to have some healthy food but there were no options available. I always ended up myself having very unhealthy stuffs. There should not be maximum more than 3 hour gap in your meal. Your immediate hunger makes you to have something which is available in the vicinity and you end up having unhealthy food. To avoid this gap, you can carry dry fruits, nuts, seasonal fruits or home made food if possible. Your mom will be happy too once you start carrying lunch.

6. Avoid Raw Salt/Fake Sugar: Real Enemies

Fake sugar and raw salt are very unhealthy for our body which we consume without skipping a single day. The raw salt kicks in hypertension and high blood pressure. It ruins your fruits and salad too. The amount of salt should be perfect at the time of cooking the food. It is said that our stomach does not know the taste of anything. It is just the taste buds which controls us. You want to improve your health then you must control your taste buds. It is not controlling but it is only shifting from one taste to another.

Just consuming fake sugar in itself is enough to put on bad fat over your belly and face. This fat from your face and belly is very hard to burn. Next time, you go for a shopping in super market, try to go through the ingredients of the product. You will be surprised to know that most of the products have sugar in it. It is said that sugar helps the packed products for not letting it go sour. But the degree of fake sugar in the packaged products are very higher. The brands make you addictive to consume their products more and more with the help of adding sugar. On the top of it, you add more sugar while preparing your breakfast. In the end, you just give up by thinking that my fat is determined to stay in my body.

Ayurveda says that the natural sugar in the fruits is not harmful for your body. Try to shift yourself from fake sugars to natural sugar. You will see the result very soon.

It helps to strengthen your metabolism and fights against major health problems. Green vegetables are great source of iron, calcium and protein also. If you are into strength training or meditation or yoga practices, It will help you to fuel your body. Once your body has enough fuel, you can go for longer training sessions. Mind you! Don't over cook the green vegetables if you want real taste of it.

8. Early Dinner

Early dinner helps in losing weight. You are working hard for your gym or morning walk but because of your bad eating habit you tend to put on more weight. We should have dinner at least 2 hour before going to sleep. Moreover, the digestion system gets slow in the late night. You are supposed to have dinner at least by 8:30 pm so that you can go to sleep by 11 pm. It will help you to strengthen the digestion system. Your skin will get healthy once you have good digestion.

9. Sleep Early

Staying up late is the worst habit in our lifestyle. This habit affects our body so badly that we hardly realize it. Even if we realize it, it is difficult to change this habit. We feel heavy head in the morning and decide again to sleep early. But the efforts are gone in vain every night. To sleep early, we have to have early dinner. Early dinner will make you sleep early naturally and you will get up early in the morning. Your entire next day routine will not be screwed up. You will be able to have proper meal on time. 10.  Walking/Running Gives A Happy High

It is said that if you cannot do any physical activity then just walk. There is nothing better than walking. It helps in digestion and your body gets used to some physical activity. Brisk walk increases the supply of oxygen in your body and as I said before, the more oxygen you breathe in the more your skin gets healthy. Walking also helps in shaping your body up. Try not to leave an opportunity for walking. You are not supposed to use stairs only if there is a fire in the building! Use stairs in every day routine at your office premises if possible. Don't just land in front of the shopping complex. Park your car in the parking area and take a walk to the main shopping area. Don't keep sitting on your butt and honking at the gate of your society flat, get out of the car and open the gate if there is nobody to help you! You have to tell your body that physical activity is a part of your daily life.
